Astra Sweets produces various sorts of quality sweets. The company has several production sites in Belgium and the Netherlands. Among its clients are supermarkets, cash & carries, wholesale, candy specialist stores and organisations in the out-of-home market such as gas stations and drugstores.
In 2009, a year after the implementation of a number of modules of Objective MES at their production site at Turnhout, Astra Sweets decided to implement an LGV (Laser Guided Vehicle) for the end products. To accomplish this project, four parties worked together: De Clercq Solutions, EuroImpianti, Delaware (SAP) en Astra Sweets.
An LGV is in fact an unmanned forklift truck that in this case continually transports pallets from palletization to buffer locations in the warehouse.
The end products are first stacked by a number of robots, after which the pallet is automatically brought to a conveyor, and wrapped and labelled with an SSCC label thanks to a label applicator controlled by Objective.
At the end position of the conveyor the SSCC code is scanned and Objective checks whether the pickup location of the LGV is free or not. If free, the pallet is transported to the pickup location and Objective uploads the SSCC code to the ERP system. Then the LGV transports the pallet to the right buffer location in the warehouse.
